Our mission
At Piano Expressions, our mission is to provide comprehensive music education to the Anne Arundel County, MD community through quality piano lessons and unique music programs. We aim to inspire students to discover their unique creativity and individuality through music, fostering a balanced and fulfilling life enriched by artistic expression.
Our Story
Located in Odenton, Maryland, Piano Expressions was founded by Dorene Chen, a passionate pianist and educator dedicated to nurturing musical talent. The studio offers both private, semi-private and group piano lessons, designed for students from elementary to early advanced levels, providing a supportive environment for growth and learning.
The studio also offers various summer programs for youth.
Our founder
Ms. Dorene Chen commenced her studies under the tutelage of Professor Bing Xu at the Sichuan Conservatory of Music in China at age of 9. At 14, she was certified in Piano Performance at the highest level for non-music majors from the Chinese Musical National Committee. Furthermore, she received a full scholarship for the Piano Program at the Masterworks Music Festival during the summers of 2009 and 2010.
Ms. Chen served as the piano accompanist at Grace College in Winona Lake, Indiana from 2008 to 2010. She pursued her Master of Music degree in Piano Performance and Pedagogy at Ball State University with professor Lori Rhoden, supported by a full assistantship, which she completed in 2013. Additionally, she acquired a Master’s degree in Business Administration through a full assistantship in 2015.
Ms. Chen was an engaged performer within the community. During her residence in the state of Indiana from 2010 to 2016, California from 2016 to 2018, and now Maryland till present, she collaborated with numerous instrumentalists and vocalists, school choirs and participated in competition events throughout her stay. She is also an accomplished church pianist within each state of residence.
Ms. Chen holds the prestigious title of Nationally Certified Teacher of Music in Piano through the Music Teachers National Association in the United States since 2013. She has also be an active and involved member of the Maryland State Music Teachers Association, and Anne Arundel Music Teachers Association since 2018.
